Managing Wildlife Habitat: Complex Interactions With Biotic and Abiotic Disturbances

چکیده

Sustainable forest management strategies include emulating historical disturbance regimes to achieve multiple objectives. Partial-harvesting are used overcome conflicts between timber production and wildlife habitat conservation; however, the potential impacts on complex interactions ecological functions remain largely unknown. In 1984, a controlled experiment was initiated in dry forests of central British Columbia, Canada, test partial harvesting intended enhance mule deer while allowing extraction. To determine short- long-term regimes, we quantified changes structure susceptibility western spruce budworm, Douglas-fir beetle, wildfire. We compared structural attributes 2014 (30 years after first harvest) 2015 (1 year second treated forests, contrasted them with control that were measured 2015. short term post-harvest), altered by reducing total canopy cover, subcanopy tree density basal area, increasing abundance large woody surface fuels. long did not differ treatment areas, partly due increased growth trees. Harvesting had little impact budworm. Susceptibility beetle lower fewer available mature host trees, but levels similar over term. Reduced fuels base height decreased likelihood crown fire favor fire. term, recovered, fuel loads remained low 30 years. interacts biotic abiotic disturbances Potential cascading affects depended more decision remove residuals mitigate infestations wildfire than time since treatment. Provided occurs at intervals ? immediately removed, extraction can be compatible sustainable management.

Tritrophic Interactions Across Biotic and Abiotic Gradients

Responses to previous reviews This LTREB proposal was submitted in January, 2008 and was not funded. The reviewer and panel comments were very helpful in drafting a revision and in contemplating the long-term research goals of the PI. All reviewer comments prompted changes in this proposal; the most notable concerns and criticisms (italicized and shortened) from the panel summary are directly a...

Biotic and Abiotic Interactions in Ecosystems

Biotic and Abiotic Interactions in Ecosystems Plants live in complex environments where many biotic and abiotic factors limit or promote productivity and carbon biosequestration. Temperature and water extremes, nutrient and other resource availabilities, microbeinduced diseases, and insect attacks can limit plant productivity. At the same time, this productivity intimately depends on plant inte...

Abiotic and biotic stress combinations.

Environmental stress conditions such as drought, heat, salinity, cold, or pathogen infection can have a devastating impact on plant growth and yield under field conditions. Nevertheless, the effects of these stresses on plants are typically being studied under controlled growth conditions in the laboratory. The field environment is very different from the controlled conditions used in laborator...
